Sava Sara Brakada, AKA Xsara was born on 06-27-2004. She was raised in Kennel Brakada spending the first two months of her life on beautiful countryside Gorenjska (Slovenia) with her siblings and parents. As soon as she came to Ljubljana we started a puppy class, followed by an obedience class. She passed her B-bh exam with 96 points (instructor Agility EO winner Polona Bonač). We now continue with Rally-Obedience under Polona's supervision. Our biggest passion however is Agility. We started our first Agility class in October 2005 (club Agility Ilirija, instructor Silvia Trkman, two times agility world champion). When Silvia stopped teaching agility classes, we switched to Daša Zakotnik. We regularly participate in Agility trials in Slovenia and sometimes abroad. Xsara also loves to learn new dog tricks, you can see some of them in our videos. Her other passions include long walks, big meals and playing with dogs, specially her pyr shep sister Tani, her crazy agility pals and her sister Sena.

The Big Decision

After three years of research, pro-con lists and discussions I finally decided to have Xsara spayed. Yesterday I talked to our vet and seems like January is the month (she's in heat now so we have to wait). It's one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make but I came to the conclusion it's best for her. If any of you have experiences in this field, it would be great if you would share them with us. Preferably happy stories but all information is welcome!

Another thing I wanted to say: as most of you know, the new DWB calendar is out! All DWB calendars are awesome, but I think this year they really outdid themselves. It includes many different dogs, most of them are our dear friends (and they were very sweet to think of us as well). To view the pages and order it simply click the following image:

It's for a good cause since ALL of the profit goes to doggy rescue!

I know how you're feeling now Xsara's mom. My hoomans are very afraid to spay me & Faith too coz there are risks. Altho many dogs have been successfully spayed & are fine, there are a few who did not do so well. Either during spaying or after. Heard before one vet overdosed the amount of anesthetic & the dog died after that. Sorry for talking something negative here but it's just to let you know. If you think your vet is a good vet & is very sure of what he/she's doing, than I'm very sure everything will go smoothly. I will be spayed after I have my 1st litter of puppies. It will definitely be this year or next year. Spaying is actually good for the dog becoz if the dog keeps on having period for many years, the dog can get uterus infection or cancer. We doggies are not like humans...I think this is what is best for her. But do bear in mind, some females after spaying, put on weight & will slow down. This is another reason why my hoomans don't want to spay me especially. I cannot slow down at a young age when I have so many jobs to do especially dancing. Hopefully Xsara will not slow down or put on weight. The important thing is that you keep her active all the time then she will be like the way she is right now. Good luck to you & her!

Love licks,
Solid Gold Dancer

I trust my vet completely, I know they will take care of her. I don't think she will put on too much weight, she is one of the lightest beagles I know. I will continue working with her as soon as she will recover enough to run and I intend feeding her a little less for some time. I always keep track of her weight and regulate her food amounts based on this. I know there are risks but I think the risks of NOT doing it are more dangerous. So I'm choosing the lesser evil, I guess. It's very hard but I think we have to do this. Anyway, thank you so much for your input!

ps
če boš hotla da grem s tabo ko boš Xsaro sterilizirala povej.

She'll do fine with the spaying. There are risks to everything, even being groomed. But I say the odds are in your favor!

And your picture in the DWB Calendar is sooo cute!

I think it sounds like you're making a very informed choice on what you feel is best for Xsara and that is what being a responsible owner is all about. You still do agility with her though there are risks to that so it's all about weighing up the pros and cons and looking at your individual situation which it sounds like you have done.

I think it's only human and natural to worry about them going in for any type of procedure and we certainly do hope it all goes smoothly for her.

Lorenza had lots of hormonal troubles unchained by her first heat. The vet we were seeing at that time told me not to spay her. I looked for a second opinion and thankfully found an extraordinary doctor for her. She was spayed and everything went well. She had lots of health troubles not because of the surgery, but for not doing it on time.
There are risks for everything. I am sure you will make the right decision for Xsara. Don't worry, she will be fine.
Have a good night

Both of my dogs have been "fixed" and with no real problems.
I believe they are healthier and safer because of it.
Have no regrest about your decision. You are a good mom to Xsara!

Coming from our past experience, which is we have always rescued pups and kitties off the street; we have always spayed and neutered as soon as we rescued them.

We've never had any problems with the procedures. I was up and running around the next day, and Gracie was on leash rest for five or so days after. But none of us have ever had any problems. And Mum has never seen any weight issues with either of us, either.

Besides, for us to compete in AKC, since we don't have papers, we must be 'fixed'. That's their requirement here in the US.

We know it's a difficult decision, but we think it's a good one.

Woofs, Johann

Johann, that's really interesting, I didn't know AKC had such a requirement! Very very interesting!

Thanks to everyone, your stories are really making me feel better about this decision. It's still an incredibly difficult decision but it's easier. Xsara's never even been under anesthesia before!

Hi Xsara! Glad to see you stopped by our blog. And let us just say that you are GORGEOUS!!!!
Our Mom wanted to put in a few words about the spay:
I know there are a lot of negative issues surrounding spay operations, but it's very rare that anything terrible happens. Of course, with any operation, she needs fantastic care during and after. But as you said, you trust your vet and that's the main thing that will make you feel better about the whole thing. I've had 9 dogs throughout my life and I've had them all spayed/neutered (Orion and Cassie will be fixed soon). You made the right decision, however, in waiting a while to have her fixed. Research shows that getting a dog fixed too early (within the first few months) can cause growth and other health problems down the line. Some dogs gain weight, but many do not. As long as you give her more than one meal a day and make sure she gets lots of water, then it shouldn't be a problem :) Good Luck!
Oh and PS. Cassie is getting spayed tomorrow morning
